Or it might be a good time to check out Ubuntu: http://www.simplehelp.net/2007/04/27/how-to-install-ubuntu-feisty-fawn-in-os-x-using-parallels-a-complete-walkthrough/
I was attempting to edit home movies, and 2 minutes worth of edited video takes up 32GB of space.
I was attempting to save the file under a different name and of course I couldn't because there wasn't enough space on my 80GB hard drive.
I have two other movies (full versions of Ghostbusters and Wallace and Gromit) and it takes up less than a GB of space. But I cannot save four total minutes of edited home video. Ridiculous.
Most everything else is minor gripes. The main reasons I picked up a Mac though were: virus protection (solid OS), and editing photos/videos. Those are supposed to be two major reasons to choose Mac over PC. So far I only have had success with the former.
I finally did figure out the problem, and was allowed to save the video, but the major issue (space used from edited video) has not been resolved.
The transition has not been as smooth as I was expecting. Maybe I was expecting too much, all I know is that the Mac commercials used to make me laugh, now I sympathize that the nerdy PC man is being misrepresented. (I manage to remind myself that it is just a character)
Ubuntu Studio has been released, it's packaged with a bunch of tools for music and video editing.
You'll also want to run Automatix2 for some of the proprietary stuff the Ubuntu community frowns upon.
But after that, you'd probably have a pretty cool system. Oh, yeah, you can also turn it into a DVR with MythTV, which has more features than TiVo, like smart commercial skipping, better archiving, easy upgradability, and being completely free.
I have never wasted so much money on anything, and I lost 2K on Xerox stock too.
ReplyDeleteYou could just use it for Windows:

Um... is your macbook Intel based?
What specific issues are you having with the MacBook? I've been enjoying mine, so long as I don't want to play games.
ReplyDeleteAlso I've had good experiences with dual booting Windows on it.
